The Churchill Chair (and a Little Jimmy Rig)
The living room finally has a reading chair. Not just any chair: a secondhand Restoration Hardware Churchill leather chair we found online for a fraction of what it costs new.
Why the Churchill?
The Churchill is Restoration Hardware's take on a classic English library chair: rolled arms, a tight back, nailhead trim and leather that gets better as it gets beat up. It's compact enough for our split-level living room and looks like it has been reading books since 1940.
The jimmy rig
The chair had one problem: a back leg that wobbled. The previous owner's fix was a folded-up coaster. Ours was slightly better, but let's be honest, it's a jimmy rig (or jury rig, if you're picky):
- Flipped the chair and found the leg's corner block had come loose.
- Scraped out old glue, re-glued the block with wood glue, and clamped it overnight.
- Added two new screws through the block into the frame.
No more wobble. The coaster has been retired with honors.
Now I just need to read more books. Which, conveniently, is next week's post.
