A Weekend in NYC: Fig & Olive and Mung Bean Griddle Cakes

By the Split · · 2 min read

When the bathroom was finished, we gave ourselves a reward: three days in New York City, no paint, no tools, no Home Depot. We ate. A lot.

Fig & Olive

Our first brunch was at Fig & Olive, the Mediterranean spot known for olive oil tastings and crostini. The room is all white, warm wood and greenery, and we spent half of brunch taking notes on the light fixtures. Is it possible to eat avocado toast and plan a kitchen at the same time? Yes.

Mung bean griddle cakes in Koreatown

Our favorite bite of the trip was in Koreatown: bindaetteok, a crispy Korean mung bean griddle cake (also called a mung bean pancake). Soaked mung beans are ground with kimchi, bean sprouts and pork, then pan-fried until the edges shatter. Dipped in soy-vinegar sauce, it's perfect.

What we brought home

  • A plan to use more plants and warm wood in the living room
  • A strong opinion about brass light fixtures
  • About four extra pounds

Now back to Minneapolis, where the hallway is waiting.
